چکیده

The “Barcode of Life” Consortium is a worldwide initiative devoted to perform a molecular inventory of Earth’s biodiversity. The Cytochrome Oxidase c subunit I (COI) gene of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been successfully used for identification of North American bird species. However, this technique has not been previously employed to Neotropical birds’ identification. Typical antbirds (Thamnophilidae) inhabit Neotropical forests and comprise over 200 species. Since 1990, 19 new species have been recognized in the Thamnophilidae family, thus making it a good candidate for taxonomic studies. In this study, we showed that it is possible to discriminate 16 Thamnophilidae species using a small COI gene region. Divergences obtained between species, even congeneric ones, were much higher than the observed within species. Although it is generally believed that tropical birds tend to show high intraspecific genetic diversity, we concluded that the COI barcodes have the potential to identify accurately Neotropical birds. It makes possible the discrimination of species that exhibit few informative morphological characters and the implementation of fast large-scale inventories of the barely known Neotropical avifauna.

DNA barcodes provide new evidence of a recent radiation in the genus Sporophila (Aves: Passeriformes).

The capuchinos are a group of birds in the genus Sporophila that has apparently radiated recently, as evidenced by their lack of mitochondrial genetic diversity. We obtained cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequences (or DNA barcodes) for the 11 species of the group and various outgroups. We compared the patterns of COI variability of the capuchinos with those of the largest barcode data set from n...

Probing Evolutionary Patterns in Neotropical Birds through DNA Barcodes

BACKGROUND The Neotropical avifauna is more diverse than that of any other biogeographic region, but our understanding of patterns of regional divergence is limited. Critical examination of this issue is currently constrained by the limited genetic information available. This study begins to address this gap by assembling a library of mitochondrial COI sequences, or DNA barcodes, for Argentinia...

New taxa of the subfamily Picobiinae (Cheyletoidea: Syringophilidae) parasitizing antbirds and gnateaters (Passeriformes: Thamnophilidae, Conopophagidae) in Guyana.

A new genus and three new species of the picobiin quill mites (Cheyletoidea: Syringophilidae) are described from passeriform birds in Guyana, Phipicobia pygiptilae gen. nov. and sp. nov. parasitizing Pygiptila stellaris (Spix) (Thamnophilidae), Rafapicobia thamnophili sp. nov. from Thamnophilus insignis Salvin et Godman (type host), Myrmoborus leucophrys (Tschudi), Myrmeciza ferruginea (St. Mül...

DNA sequence data reveal a subfamily-level divergence within Thamnophilidae (Aves: Passeriformes).

The Thamnophilidae is a diverse radiation of insectivorous passerine birds that comprises nearly 220 species and is mostly restricted to the lowlands and lower montane forests of the Neotropics. Current classification within Thamnophilidae relies primarily on morphological variation, but recent incorporation of molecular and vocal data has promoted changes at various taxonomic levels. Here we d...

Phylogenetic Assessment of Some Species of Crocus Genus Using DNA Barcoding

DNA barcoding is a simple method for the identification of any species using a short genetic sequence from a standard genome section. The present study aimed at examining the nuclear and chloroplast diversity as well as the phylogenetic relationships of eight species of saffron including four spring-flowering and five autumn-flowering species from different parts of Iran, using the nuclear barc...
